Clinical biochemistry

Clinical biochemistry focuses on the analysis of bodily fluids (e.g. blood, urine, body cavity fluids) to help diagnosis, monitoring and management of disease, using various analytical techniques.

At Finn Pathologists, we are committed to providing patients with the highest quality laboratory services. Our experienced staff are dedicated to ensuring accurate and timely results, employing procedures and activities designed to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and consistency of laboratory test results.

We understand that getting a valid, decision-making result can be stressful. That’s why we make it our priority to make the process as clinician-friendly as possible. We offer same-day results for many of our tests, and we have a team of friendly and knowledgeable staff who are always available to answer your questions.

In order to obtain valid results, it is crucial to make sure that all possible sources of “pre-analytical error” have been addressed. These are any mistakes that occurs before a laboratory test is performed and can include the following areas:

Patient Preparation

Such as not fasting the patient where needed, giving medications which may interfere with results, etc.)

Sample collection and handling

Such as incorrect container selection, under/over-filling with blood, incorrect labelling, etc

Sample storage and transportation

Such as incorrect storage temperature, inappropriate packaging

These can occur for a variety of reasons, including human error, equipment failure, and poor communication. They can have a significant impact on the accuracy of laboratory results, and can lead to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment.

If you have any questions regarding pre-analytical handling of samples, please do not hesitate to contact the lab.
